The Vineyard on the Hill

Our vineyard sits on top of a hill, elevation 1190 ft. The view from the vineyard is absolutely breathtaking. We can see the state capital over 30 miles away. The sunrises, sunsets, and storm clouds are unbelievable. Many nights we can sit on the deck and watch the birds soar in the valley. There is one pair of geese that we see almost every day that circle the vineyard, fly into the valley and swoop down to the pond.

Exceptional, Early Growing Season Favorable for Michigan Red Wines

LANSING -- As harvest is wrapped up and tanks are filled with the crushed reward of the season's labor, Michigan's winemakers are already raving about the 2010 vintage, and with good reason. Many feel that the long, warm growing season will result in some of the best wines they've produced. The bad news is that quantities may be limited, due to a series of spring frosts that damaged early bud-break varieties in some vineyards.

Leading Minds in Viticulture Share Recent Achievements

On Friday, November 12, winemakers and grape growers from around Michigan gathered at Michigan State University's (MSU) Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Station for a one-day workshop to hear top researchers and viticulturalists talk about canopy management, rootstock selection, vineyard mechanization, promising cultivar varieties, and managing freezing stress in the vineyard. The one-day workshop, titled "Recent Achievements in Viticulture Research and Vineyard Management Practices," was organized by Paul Jenkins and Paolo Sabbatini of MSU to share the cutting-edge research progress that has been going on in vineyards in New York, Ohio, Missouri and California. The following is a summary of a few important highlights from the workshop, and my own input into some considerations for Midwestern wine grape growers.
