In new wine growing regions determining the best grapes to plant, in terms of survivability, productivity and yielding high quality wines, is frequently accomplished through trial and error. Fortunately many state university research stations are taking the lead by establishing test plots for various wine grapes.  Their efforts can assist the winegrower by providing high quality data that can be valuable for viticultural planning purposes.
