About Winedustry.com

There is an exciting and thriving wine industry located outside the traditional vinifera wine regions of North America. A new wine culture is emerging and is largely ignored by the traditional wine news and information sources. Thanks in large part to grape breeding programs of innovative universities, new cultivars combining the best of the old and new world vines are quickly making a name for themselves. These “Other” grapes, sometimes called French-American hybrids, cold-hardy or cold-climate cultivars, or simply old-school American classics are leading the way to a new wine culture.

Traditional approaches to wine growing, wine making and marketing wines to this new wine culture requires a different approach. What works well in California with the so-called “noble” varietals often doesn’t work well in our vineyards and wineries. The new wine culture is thriving and emerging in our areas, in places like Iowa, Missouri, Texas, North Carolina, Virginia, Minnesota, Nebraska and in New York and Michigan, just to name a few states.

Baco Noir, Traminette, Marechal Foch, Catawba, Seyval, Norton, Frontenac, Brianna, Marquette, and St. Pepin represent a few of these “Other” grapes, the neglected varietals and cultivars, which WINEDUSTRY.COM will focus on! Our goal is to work with wine growers, scholars, graduate students, wine makers, extension associates, distributors and retailers...

To advance, promote and support the “Other” Wine Industry through news, information, education, collaboration, and insightful commentary.
